Applications of laboratory filtration

Filtration is a fundamental technique used in various fields, including microbiology, analytical chemistry, research, and quality control; it is employed in all laboratories for numerous activities:

The filtration process takes place by passing a fluid through a filtration device to separate, on one side, the particles to be retained and, on the other, the filtered fluid.

Generally, filtration is facilitated by applying a pressure differential that accelerates the passage of the fluid through the filter:

Syringe filters: the pressure differential is generated by pushing the syringe plunger
Filter membranes and filtration funnels: as well as vacuum filtration systems, pumps are used to generate a vacuum, drawing the fluid through the filter
